Hennie Otto

From golfing bad boy to first-round leader of 131st Open, it's been quite a journey for Hendrik Johannes Otto. He was a half-decent scrum-half as a young man and could have played for South Africa's Under-23 side. But in a Linekeresque quirk of sporting fate, the final Springbok trials coincided with a golf tournament and he chose golf.

Otto was born in Boksburg. He has played golf on the European Tour since 2000, but has only finished within the top 100 on the Order of Merit twice, in 2003 when he finished tied for tenth at The Open Championship on his major championship debut and in 2008 when he won the Italian Open and finished 37th on the Order of Merit.

Otto has won seven times on the Sunshine Tour since 1999, the most notable victory coming at The Tour Championship in 2003.

In 2008, Otto won his first tournament on the European Tour at the Italian Open and moved into the top 100 of the Official World Golf Rankings.
